New Biowulf Login Node

From: steven fellini (sfellini@nih.gov)
Date: 07 Dec 2005

A new login node has been made available with a
hostname of biowulf.nih.gov. This node has been
configured with updated versions of RedHat Linux,
Perl and compilers from The Portland Group, Intel
and (soon to come) PathScale.

The previous login node (biobos.nih.gov) will
remain available for a short time, but will soon
be converted to a purely administrative node.

Please report any problems to staff@biowulf.nih.gov

-----------------------------------------------------
Details of the new login system follow:

o Dual-processor 3.2 GHz Xeon processors, 4 GB memory

o RedHat Enterprise Linux 3.6

o Perl version 5.8.7

All libraries that existed with 5.6.1 also exist
under 5.8.7. There should be no need to change any
of your scripts or recompile any applications.

Compiler Information:

o New compiler versions

     GNU 3.2.3
     Portland Group 6.0
     Intel 9.0
     PathScale (To Be Announced)

o Any of the compilers can be used to compile
     64-bit code by allocating a 64-bit interactive
     node:

     qsub -l nodes=1 -I

o Note that the procedure to set PATHs and
environment variables has changed for some
     compilers.

     See the table http://biowulf.nih.gov/compilers.html
for details. Also see the revised User Guide
     http://biowulf.nih.gov/user_guide.html

o MPICH and MPICH-GM libraries have also been
built with several of the new compilers. See
the above table for details. (Note: 64-bit
     Myrinet libraries are not available).
