Configuring Outlook 2010 for IMAP
Configuration Part 1: Startup Wizard
Your first invocation of Outlook 2010 will cause the Startup wizard to run. The wizard already knows your name and makes an educated guess at your e-mail address. Frustratingly, later on it seems to lose track of them.
- Configure E-mail account? Respond Yes, click Next
- Select Internet E-mail radio button, click Next
- Fill in your Name and E-mail Address one more time
- Account Type: IMAP
- Incoming mail server: helix.nih.gov
- Outgoing mail server: mailfwd.nih.gov
- Uncheck the "Remember password" checkbox
- Click the More Settings button, select the Advanced tab
- Incoming server (IMAP): Use the following type of encrypted
connection: SSL
(port number changes from 143 to 993) - Server Timeouts: Drag pointer to 2m instead of 1
- Click OK button

- Uncheck
Test Account Settings by clicking the Next button

A message should arrive in your Helix Inbox; no need to read it at this time - Click Next button
- Select Internet E-mail radio button, click Next
- Click Finish button
Configuration Part 2: In Outlook Proper
Select Outlook's File tab- Click Options in the left panel
- Select Mail in the left panel
- Under Compose messages
- Compose messages in this format: Plain Text (recommended)
- Under Conversation Cleanup
- Check the Don't move unread messages checkbox
- Under Message format
- Uncheck Use Cascading style Sheets (CSS) checkbox
- Automatically wrap text at character: 72
- Under Compose messages
- Select Advanced in the left panel
- Other
- Uncheck the Allow analysis of sent e-mails ... checkbox
- If you correspond only in English, navigate to International options
- Check the two checkboxes that start with
Use English
- Select Western European (ISO) as the Preferred encoding for outgoing messages
- Check the two checkboxes that start with
- Other
- Click the OK button to resume your mail session
- Select Mail in the left panel
