Configuring Netscape Messenger for IMAP and LDAP
Pull down the Edit menu and select Preferences
- Click the + to the left of Mail & Groups to expand its
menu
- Select Identity
- Enter your real name
- Enter your email address
- Helix users enter their usernames "at helix," e.g. rick@helix.nih.gov
- Skip over the Reply-to box; fill in the Organization and Signature File boxes if desired
- It is recommended you not check the box for always attaching an Address Book Card
- Select Mail Server
- Enter your login (username) on the mail server, e.g. rick
- Enter the hostname of your Outgoing mail server
- Helix users enter mailfwd.nih.gov
- Exception: If connecting through a non-NIH Internet services provider (ISP), use your ISP's outgoing mail server (also known as SMTP server) instead
- Enter the hostname of your Incoming mail server
- Helix users enter helix.nih.gov
- Choose a Local mail directory to your liking
- Select IMAP as the Mail Server Type (you may have to click an Edit button first)
- Click the More Options button or the Advanced tab
- Enter your mailbox pathname as the IMAP server directory
- Helix users enter /var/mail/username, e.g. /var/mail/rick
- Helix users: If your version of Messenger supports
namespace settings, you should set the Other Users
namespace to a subdirectory of your home
directory. Otherwise Messenger will interpret all
your files as mail folders!
- Suggested value (include the quotation marks): "~/mail"
- As mail clients can become confused if you check for new mail too frequently, it is recommend you set the mail check interval for at least 15 minutes
- Click OK
- Enter your mailbox pathname as the IMAP server directory
- Select Directory
- Click New to add a Directory Server entry
- Enter NIH LDAP directory service as the Description
- Enter directory.nih.gov as the LDAP Server
- Enter o=nih,c=us as the Search Root
- Click OK
- Use the arrow buttons to move "NIH LDAP directory service" to the top of the list
- Select Messages
- It is recommended that you not send messages as HTML by default
- Lines should be set to wrap at under 80 characters; 72 is a good choice
- Click OK to close the Preferences box
