Configuring Macintosh Eudora 5.2 for IMAP and LDAP
Versions of Macintosh Eudora prior to 4.2 do not support IMAP. The current version is available from PUBnet (ftp://ftpubnet.nih.gov/PUBNet/Mac%20Software/Applications%20-%20Classic/) In addition to the above link, PUBnet is accessible as a shared volume available via AppleTalk zones to all Mac users at NIH.
Pull down the Special menu and select Settings
- Select 'Getting Started'
- Username: enter your helix username (e.g. johnxq)
- Mail server: helix.nih.gov
- Real Name: (enter your real name)
- SMTP server: mailfwd.nih.gov
- Return address (can leave blank)
Select 'Checking Mail'
- Mail Protocol: select IMAP
- IMAP mailbox location prefix: mail
This is the location in your Helix account where your IMAP mail folders will be stored. The suggested value of 'mail' means that your mail folders will be in /home/username/mail on Helix. - Authentication: Passwords
- Check for mail every: 10 minutes. (suggested value)
Select 'Sending Mail'
- Default domain: nih.gov (recommended)
- SMTP server: as above
- Allow authorization: turn on
- Keep copies: turn on
This will keep copies of your outgoing mail in a folder on your desktop machine.
Select 'Attachments'
- Choose 'MIME'.
This is the most common attachment method, thus most likely to work between different mailers. - Attachment folder: (choose a folder on your dekstop machine)
If you want to use the NIH Directory Service in Eudora:
- Choose 'MIME'.
Select 'Hosts'
- Ph/LDAP server: ph.nih.gov
To read the mail
- Pull down the Mailbox menu and select <Dominant>
- Select Inbox
